Major changes for USPS proposed [real life]

snagged w/ permission from [livejournal.com profile] naamah_darling

Major changes are being floated for the USPS.

Amongst them:
closing of many locations (dunno bout you, but in the DC-area Burbs, it's a bitch enough getting to it as it is)
*privatization* of services - which means who knows what kind of background checks will be required for those handling your VIPs? And knowing who you are & where you live?
presumably, increased prices (which, really, I wouldn't mind paying a bit more to the USPS now *gah - never thought I'd say that*)

Hearings (which do NOT have to be publicized), will occur around July 28 - alert your Congressional representatives!

Sadly, the USPS actually works and does what it says, so now they are going to have to go a screw it up.

Tha closings part scares me. There are a lot of small towns outhere without a post office, and now they are going to have even less. It's gong to really piss the people off if they have to drive an hour to get their mail.

True - but for A) a good deal more money, if not a heavy package and B) you have to arrange a pickup... and C) they don't pickup/deliver on Saturdays - unless you want to pay through the nose.

I get that they're feeling the crunch - but I don't see how (esp in the long term) outsourcing or otherwise drastically changing how they operate (other than closing some of the less-well-performing *considering their area (rural vs subirban or urban)*. Again, I'd pay a bit more for the postal service - especially for cards/letters.

Just - seems like there's gotta be a different way.

As someone who works in the security industry - for both jobs - it is a bit worrisome that "official use only" stuff coming from IRS or my bank could be handled by just any ole person, who may not have jack s* known about them other than legal age to work.
