Sounds silly, but I've been on a home-decorating show binge of late (silly, to a degree, b/c I rent an apartment, and most shows = homeowners, like we renters don't give a damn about what IS our home while we're living there, sigh). Mostly FLN: Christopher Lowell (though I liked his old show on TLC better), Closet Cases, and especially Mission: Organization.

Anyhow... between these, and finding my FlyLady (www.flylady.net) Control Journal, and *finally* being able to even consider getting rid of the last of the crap I had to bring from my marriage home... and yeah...

Due to some reason (really, not sure why) I started the room overhaul for tonight with my Master Bath. Now, for a MBA, it's *tiny*. The countertop is barely bigger than the sink. So needless to say, storage - um, no. Not much. Recently my dad helped me to install a chrome 2-shelf (w/ towel rack that wasn't attached, too short) so I could get some of the crap off my "vanity". It helped - but still a lot of crap... and under it,
8 little crates, 7 in use
6 Sterlite shoeboxes that overflowed to on either side of the toilet,
2 stackable open...bins, with "never a place" to put things on my sink...

I am down to

1 bin for ALL my makeup (ok, maybe >95%) on the toilet back, 2 crates in matching white on a shelf, 1 Crate, 1 bin (all my daily skincare & hair styling crap), and 4 Sterlites. I have almost nothing on my sink other than soap & TB/rinse cup & 3 bits of contact stuff in the corner. Nothing on the floor either.

Cleared out & re-org'd my shower too. Then wiped it ALL down, shook out rugs, swept & mopped (yeah - I was blonde - asthma & allergies NOT enjoying this adventure <2hrs before bedtime).

Wow - I might actually enjoy coming into my Bathroom, and taking showers in the morning! Now to see about using some of the bath foam I've gradually acquired from AVON. Oh - and train myself better on the "Something IN, something OUT" mentality.

Hehe - is the paint coming off the walls? That's one of those things I've never quite understood. These rental places use the cheapest damn paint, which wipes off even w/ just water if you bother to keep the place clean (i.e., get rid of little handprints/bigger prints on the doorframe/corners) vs investing a bit more on wipeable matte/satin paint.

Then again, it's a 2-pronged problem. Landlords = cheap bastards, and renters (often) = don't give a damn since it ain't "theirs". Which I've *never* understood - it's still your home, isn't it? Why should whether it's OWNED by you or just Lived in make a difference other than how much genuine improving you want to do. And even then - ask! the landlord might appreciate the "free" (material reimbursement only) upgrade, and you get practice for when you DO "own" your home. GAH!

Perhaps you could ask to have the cost of a new paint job deducted from your rent one month and repaint your apartment. You could get a nice washable semi-gloss.

Just a thought.
